New Emergency Numbers – Jan 2011

Phone Service – As a cost savings measure for ULC we have discontinued our answering service and will be utilizing a voicemail system in the near future. In the meantime, to ensure that we provide the best service to our congregation, we are asking for your help. If members have an emergency and need to contact a pastor, please call the following numbers (in this order): Pastor Moore at home (610-395-0044), Pastor Moore’s cell phone (610-533-5479) or Pastor Ginny’s cell phone (267-247-2400). Please continue to call the church office during business hours for any other needs (610-767-6884). We will notify the congregation when the new voicemail system is in place. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we make this transition.

Prayer Ministry: Prayers for the health and healing of others is an important aspect of our ministry.  We sometimes lose the connection between those for whom we offer our prayers and their situation.  We ask that you obtain permission from those you are commending to the prayer list.  Everyone who appears on our prayer list will remain there for two weeks.  If the individual or family would like their name to remain on the prayer list after that, they will need to contact the office to make that request.  Thank you for your assistance.

Reclaiming the Sabbath – As Sunday approaches, set aside time to get ready for worship in church.  Think, read and pray about the time you will spend in worship.  Think, about the church season (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost) and what it means to you and others.  How has God appeared to you during the last week?  Think about those who need help in getting to church and how you might assist in making that happen. Read the upcoming Sunday lessons so that you are familiar with the texts that will be heard.  They will be in the yellow pages each week for the next Sunday.  Perhaps you could do this as a couple or with your family or a friend.  Pray for God to speak to you at worship.  Pray for your pastors and worship leaders as they prepare during the week to lead the service.  Pray for the congregation as they too are preparing to reclaim the Sabbath each week in their lives.

Lessons for Sunday, January 6 - Isaiah 42:1–9, Acts 10:34–43 and John 1:35-51.

IX. Closing Prayer

  • Council adjourned its business meeting following the Lord’s Prayer to meet with members of the congregation in the Nave for dialog regarding the 2011 budget.

X. 2011 Budget Discussion – Following is a summary of all ideas shared by Congregation members:

  • Jeff Barber: Use the total giving number as of 12/31/2010 as the 2011 budget total
  • Glen Wampole:
    • Do not use commitment cards.
    • Have different budgets for the Congregation to select from.
    • Follow up on Stewardship commitments that have not been fulfilled.
    • Possible temporary reduction in salaries.
  • Herb Gifford: Offer the budget with spending authorization plan (ie Committee may spend 80% of the budgeted number without reservation).
  • Jillian Miller: Staff salary benchmark study shows our staff is underpaid.  Do not make percentage cuts across the board.
  • Doug Lotz:  Take $44K for Synod and put the entire amount “on hold” until the end of the year.  Pay only if we have it. Make the whole amount a contingency,
  • Scott Smith: We need more communication promoting our church.  Members need help, possibly a committee, to help communicate to the public through information cards, flyers, etc.
  • Curtis Schneck: Less members are attending worship and Sunday School.  We need to find out why people are dissatisfied and work together to get members involved again.
  • Linda Sell (on behalf of other members):
    • Eliminate the Nursery Coordinator position.
    • Reuse music we already own instead of spending on new music.
  • Keith Williams: Analyze institutions of benevolence and pay them out of interest instead of budgeting new money.
  • Steve Dymond:
    • Defer mileage expense for employees and have them claim on personal taxes instead of the church compensating.
    • We are not maximizing our Time & Talents database for volunteers.
    • Have fundraiser dinners once a month to pay down the mortgage.
  • Tom McGowan: We need to unite committees together as one to fundraise and bring in potential members.
  • Dick Handwerk: Use incentives (such as perfect attendance pins) to reward attendance at Sunday School.
  • Doug Lotz:
    • Remove Associate Pastor and reevaluate.
    • Go to one service per Sunday.
  • Bud Shaffer:
    • Take a closer look at nursery attendance.
    • Cut some new music purchases.
    • Reevaluate what copyrights we pay for and what we get for it.
  • Jeff Barber: look at benefit of having a child care center.  People want a personal invitation to attend.
  • Tracey McGowan: Charge for Lenten Soup dinners.
  • Jeff Barber: Pick up giving envelopes at church instead of mailing out.
  • Evelyn Williams: Evaluate who participates in Simply Giving program and make sure they are not receiving envelopes.
  • Jeff Barber: Paid staff should leave the meeting so salary discussions can take place.  Vote: majority votes for staff members to stay.
    • Doug Lotz, Gail Allison, Tracey McGowan all express that they do not wish to discuss salary at all.  Group majority agrees.
  • Bud Shaffer (via written statement):
    • All funds designated for V2011 or mortgage reduction should be deposited that same month to reduce the principal.
    • Any savings account should be examined and funds not planned for expense in the next year should be transferred to CDs.
    • Reduce the checking account total by transferring any amount over $50,000 into CDs.

President Keith Williams closed the discussion and everyone departed.

Respectfully Submitted,
Melissa Metzger

Dine-Around: Round 2 – The Journeymen, the Men’s Ministry Group of Union Lutheran Church are initiating another Dine-Around, scheduled to begin in January 2011. The concept is simple: 3-4 couples take a turn hosting a dinner for their group—either at the hosting couple’s home, or at a restaurant of their choice.  If the dinner is held at the hosting couple’s home, the hosts usually provide the main course, while the other couples bring an appetizer, salad, or dessert.  If the hosting couple chooses to meet at a restaurant, everyone pays for their own meal (Dutch Treat).  After each couple in the group has had a turn hosting, their Dine-Around is completed. By request, we are also inviting Singles to join the Dine-Around this round!  If you are a “single” and would like to participate in the Dine-Around with couples—or other singles—just indicate your choice when signing up.  We will also do our best to accommodate any other “special requests” such as smaller groups (3 couples), or couples with small children that might want to get-together and form a group.  Just mention your request(s) when signing up. This is a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other folks in the congregation in a nice relaxed setting!  If you are interested, please contact the Church Office at 610-767-6884 or by email at office@unionlutheranchurch.org. Deadline for signing up is Monday December 27, 2010. Why not give it a try?
