Christian Book Club
Dec 22nd
Christian Book Club – People of the Book, by Geraldine Brooks, is inspired by a true story and is the next Book Club selection. Hanna Heath, an Australian rare book expert, has been offered the job of a lifetime: analysis and conservation of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, rescued from Serb shelling during the Bosnian war. Priceless and beautiful, the book is one of the earliest Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images. When Hanna discovers a series of tiny artifacts in its ancient binding, she begins to unlock the book’s mysteries. You can pick up the book in the church office for the cost of $12. The discussions will take place on January 21st and 24th. We look forward to a lively discussion with YOU as part of it!
ELCA 2009 Assembly Discussion
Dec 22nd
ELCA 2009 Assembly Discussion – We as a congregation during the Sunday Church School time have done the theological background study for the proposed statement on human sexuality and encouraged members to respond either with the form at the end of the study or by the internet. We’ve looked at the proposed statement line by line and again encouraged members to respond to the Division of Church and Society. The pastors have written articles about it in the newsletter. Now the statement has become part of our life as the ELCA. Are there concerns about it? Do you have questions regarding it or the ministry implications pending in the ELCA? Would you like to know about the climate and interaction at the assembly? You are invited to a time of discussion and discernment regarding the adopted statement: “Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust” here at ULC. It will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Joining us that afternoon will be Pr. Mary Gade, Associate to Bishop Zeiser, a voting delegate to the 2009 ELCA Assembly, and someone who works closely with the call process for pastors in our synod. If you would like to see the adopted social statement you may pick one up in the office or you can download one at www.elca.org. To register please fill out a yellow ministry response card (please check line # 2).
